PETALING JAYA (Dec 1, 2010): The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry has seized almost RM5 million worth of computers and computer equipment from 20 companies found to be using pirated software in the Petaling Jaya district this year.

The ministry’s Petaling Jaya enforcement chief, Mohd Ruhani Bakar said the raids at the companies concerned were carried out following information from the public and the Business Software Alliance (BSA).

“Most of the companies caught using pirated software are engineering companies where the software used were for drawing (house plan) because they are cheaper than the original ones,” he told reporters here.

He said the enforcement team also seized eight laptops, worth RM174,000, from an Australian subsidiary company in Damansara here last Nov 30, also for using pirated software.

He said action under Section 41(1)(d)of the Copyright Act 1987 would be taken against the company concerned. — Bernama
